Anyone who imagines bliss is normal is going to waste a lot of time running around shouting that he's been robbed.  The fact is that most putts don't drop, most beef is tough, most children grow up to just be people, most successful marriages require a high degree of mutual toleration, most jobs are more often dull than otherwise. Life is like an old time rail journey ... delays, sidetracks, smoke, dust, cinders, and jolts, interspersed only occasionally by beautiful vistas and thrilling bursts of speed. The trick is to thank the Lord for letting you have the ride. . . .

I am asking that we stop seeking out the storms and enjoy more fully the sunlight. I am suggesting that as we go through life we “accentuate the positive.” I am asking that we look a little deeper for the good. . . . What I am suggesting is that each of us turn from the negativism that so permeates our society and look for the remarkable good among those with whom we associate, that we speak of one another’s virtues more than we speak of one another’s faults, that optimism replace pessimism, that our faith exceed our fears.

I plead with you not to let those most important things pass you by as you plan for that illusive and nonexistent future when you will have time to do all that you want to do.  Instead, find joy in the journey — now.
- President Thomas S. Monson

My dear brothers and sisters, the joy we feel has little to do with the circumstances of our lives and everything to do with the focus of our lives.

When the focus of our lives is on God’s plan of salvation, which President Thomas S. Monson just taught us, and Jesus Christ and His gospel, we can feel joy regardless of what is happening — or not happening — in our lives.  Joy comes from and because of Him.  He is the source of all joy.  We feel it at Christmastime when we sing, “Joy to the world, the Lord is come.”  And we can feel it all year round.  For Latter-day Saints, Jesus Christ is joy!
- President Russell M. Nelson

Expect miracles

In this episode of the Joy in the Journey Radio program (broadcast August 10, 2022), our host discusses why LDS singles should expect miracles in their lives and how they can use what seems to suggest the future is hopeless as proof that the future is actually hopeful.  He connects that proof with the fundamentals of the dating journey and how men and women naturally think to bring perspective on those situations that appear to support hopelessness.  Finally, he explores self-talk to demonstrate the difference between expecting and expecting miracles.  How exactly does “failure” provide hope things can change?  And what perspective can we gain from understanding how men and women naturally think?
